Happiness in Our Modern World

Happiness is a very important thing in everyone's lives. Things that make me happy are watching shows that I love, reading a nice little story, performing in a production, and the people around me that care about me. I also like to sometimes be alone, so that will make me happy sometimes. I am happiest when I am able to do some of the things I want alone when I feel like it. I am also happiest when I have my best friends around me.

For homework, we had looked at a thing that was a happiness index and it showed the places that were the happiest and the places that were not so happy. I think that it is a good thing to know because it just shows what you may be able to contribute to your country or even another so that you can make the place more cheerful. I guess the best way to measure the happiness of a nation is through politics, riots/protests, and even the internet. Also going around and seeing if people are really happy with their jobs.

For class, we read a story called "I have been called a Luddite." A Luddite basically means that they are someone that doesn't like technology. He says that an electronic community will give you nothing. If you go out and do everything and meet other people, you will be more happy. I do agree with it to some extent. I do believe that people should go out without technology and just explore the world with their eyes. I myself want to pick up a good book from time to time and go hang out with friends, I do think that technology is useful with communication. I think that communication using technology is a good thing to have so that you can talk to friends or your family to make plans for something. That's when technology is useful. Other wise, technology takes over the mind of the user and they don't connect with people outside of technology.

In the article "But Will it Make you Happy?", they talk about all the spending that people do as consumers. People start to spend their money in all places that are not helpful and then they don't have as much money as they needed. People are spending money on many useless things that they think would bring them happiness, but they in reality are just spending their money. Because of that, they aren't as happy. Sometimes the things that you buy will make you happy as they are necessary for you, but not all things make you happy. The term "Keeping up with the Joneses" is a term used to describe cultural inferiority and comparing people to others. It can be used to describe many people like the ones in the article. I can agree with this article to some extent. I do believe that spending your money on useless things will not make you happy to some extent when you really stop to think about what you just spent your money on. Some things that you buy are also sometimes necessary for you like purchasing a new book from time to time or getting a new mattress when the old one is bad. Some things are useful.
